About this ranking

Number of FDIC-insured commercial banks and savings institutions at year end, counted in the state where each institution has its headquarters.

FDIC historical summary of insured institutions, year end, for the 50 states and DC; the national value covers the same area and excludes US territories. Each value adds commercial banks and savings institutions, which the FDIC reports separately; both figures are stored with it. Credit unions are not FDIC-insured and are not included. An institution with branches in several states counts once, in its headquarters state, so the number of banks operating in a state can be higher. The series starts in 1984, when savings institutions enter the FDIC summary.

Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the states are compared on one definition. Equal values share a rank.
