Each value adds commercial banks and savings institutions, which the FDIC reports separately; both figures are stored with it. Credit unions are not FDIC-insured and are not included. An institution with branches in several states counts once, in its headquarters state, so the number of banks operating in a state can be higher. The series starts in 1984, when savings institutions enter the FDIC summary.
