Definition
The annualized number of privately owned housing units in buildings with five or more units completed during the month. All units in a multifamily building count as completed when at least half are occupied or available for occupancy.
Completion timing depends on structure size. A single-family house is complete when all finished flooring is installed, or upon occupancy if that happens first. In a privately owned building with two or more units, all units count as complete once at least half are occupied or available for occupancy. Monthly estimates are seasonally adjusted annual rates of housing units, not building counts. The latest month is preliminary and earlier estimates may be revised.
