Definition

The estimated number of new single-family houses available for sale at the end of the month, including houses not yet started, under construction, and completed.

Seasonally adjusted month-end count, not an annual rate. Census publishes these estimates in thousands of houses and the source series is converted to individual houses. The series covers new privately owned single-family houses being built for sale; it excludes existing homes and multifamily units. The latest estimate is preliminary and earlier estimates may be revised.
