Definition
The estimated number of new single-family houses for sale that are complete and still available at the end of the month. Census treats a house as complete when finished flooring is installed, or when it is occupied if that happens first.
Seasonally adjusted count of houses for sale at month-end, not houses sold during the month and not an annual rate. Census publishes estimates in thousands of houses and the source series is converted to individual houses. The three stages classify the for-sale inventory: not started, under construction, and completed. Preliminary monthly estimates may be revised.
