About this ranking
Spending on natural gas, including supplemental gaseous fuels mixed with it, bought by all sectors, in millions of current US dollars. U.S. Energy Information Administration, State Energy Data System (series NGTCV).
Includes gas bought by power plants, so it overlaps with electricity_expenditure_usd and the two should not be added together. Millions of current US dollars, not adjusted for inflation. An EIA State Energy Data System estimate: consumption of each fuel times its estimated price. Hydro, wind and solar power have no fuel cost and count only through the electricity they produce. The latest year is about 18 months old, and EIA revises earlier years with each release.
Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the states are compared on one definition. Equal values share a rank.
