About this ranking

Spending on energy bought by households for their homes: electricity, natural gas, heating oil, propane, wood and other fuels, in millions of current US dollars. U.S. Energy Information Administration, State Energy Data System (series TERCV).

Household spending on motor fuel is in the transportation sector, not here. Millions of current US dollars, not adjusted for inflation. An EIA State Energy Data System estimate: consumption of each fuel times its estimated price. Hydro, wind and solar power have no fuel cost and count only through the electricity they produce. The latest year is about 18 months old, and EIA revises earlier years with each release.

Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the states are compared on one definition. Equal values share a rank.
