About this ranking
Deaths from [object Object] (ICD-10 C33 and C34) per 100,000 inhabitants, age-standardised to the revised European Standard Population of 2013. Both sexes, all ages, by place of residence (Eurostat causes of death statistics).
Age standardisation removes the effect of different age structures, so EU countries and regions can be compared with each other. US age-adjusted rates use the 2000 US standard population and are not comparable with these. Death certification and cause coding differ between countries, and Eurostat flags some values as following a different definition. Eurostat publishes these rates about two and a half years after the reference year.
Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the EU countries are compared on one definition. Equal values share a rank.
