About this ranking

Electricity generated in the year minus the electricity used by the power plants themselves, in terawatt hours (billion kilowatt hours), from the U.S. Energy Information Administration: for countries, its International Energy Statistics; for U.S. states, its survey of utility-scale power plants of 1 megawatt or more (Form EIA-923).

Countries and U.S. states. Generation is not consumption: exporters such as France and Norway generate more than they use. State figures leave out small-scale solar such as rooftop panels, which the country figure for the United States includes, so the states add up to about 2% less than the national total.

Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the EU countries are compared on one definition. Equal values share a rank.
