United States: CDC National Vital Statistics System provisional counts, as reported, not the predicted counts CDC also publishes. Recent months are incomplete and usually rise as death records arrive; periods without final data are marked provisional. Deaths are counted where they occurred. The national figure covers the 50 states and DC. CDC publishes New York City separately; the New York State value is the sum of New York City and the rest of the state. Consecutive months overlap by 11 months, so they must not be added together.

Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the states are compared on one definition. Equal values share a rank.
