About this ranking
Net electricity generated from coal at utility-scale plants (1 megawatt or more) in the year, in terawatt hours: bituminous, subbituminous, lignite, anthracite, waste and refined coal, as reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration on Form EIA-923.
United States and its states only. Net generation can be slightly negative when idle plants use more electricity than they produce, as in Connecticut in 2020.
Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the states are compared on one definition. 1 states with data in other periods have no value for 2022 and are left out rather than filled from another source. Equal values share a rank.
