Definition
Estimated number of privately owned housing units in multifamily buildings completed in the quarter and intended for rent. Multifamily buildings have two or more units, so this category includes buildings with two to four units as well as larger buildings.
Quarterly estimates count units in privately owned new housing. They are not seasonally adjusted or annualized. Census marks the newest quarterly release as preliminary and revises the prior quarter; quarterly totals may differ from annual totals because annual figures include late reports and corrections. In a multifamily building, all units are counted as complete when at least half are occupied or available for occupancy. The series covers multifamily buildings with 2 or more units, not only buildings with 5 or more units.
