About this ranking
Percentage of people aged 15 and over who currently use any tobacco product, smoked or smokeless, daily or on some days (SDG indicator 3.a.1). Women and men together, age-standardized to the WHO standard population. E-cigarettes are not counted. WHO estimates from national surveys, published in its global report on trends in tobacco use.
Covers every tobacco product, so values are higher than cigarette smoking rates such as adult_smoking_rate, the CDC rate for US states. For about 60 countries, among them France, Germany, Japan, Spain and the United Kingdom, WHO has no estimate of all tobacco use and substitutes its estimate of tobacco smoking, so smokeless tobacco is not counted there. WHO publishes estimates every five years from 2000 and every year from 2022. Years after a country's most recent national survey are WHO projections and are not loaded, nor are its projections for 2025 and 2030, so the latest year differs by country. WHO revises these series, past years included, when new national reports or estimates come in, so values can change between retrievals.
Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the EU countries are compared on one definition. Equal values share a rank.
