About this ranking

Electricity generated in the year minus the electricity used by the power plants themselves, in terawatt hours (billion kilowatt hours), from the U.S. Energy Information Administration: for countries, its International Energy Statistics; for U.S. states, its survey of utility-scale power plants of 1 megawatt or more (Form EIA-923).

Countries and U.S. states. Generation is not consumption: exporters such as France and Norway generate more than they use. State figures leave out small-scale solar such as rooftop panels, which the country figure for the United States includes, so the states add up to about 2% less than the national total.

Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the countries are compared on one definition. 4 countries with data in other periods have no value for 2023 and are left out rather than filled from another source. Equal values share a rank.
