About this ranking
Divorces granted during the year per 1,000 residents (average population of the year). EU countries: divorces registered in the country, as compiled by Eurostat; legal separations and annulments are not divorces.
Divorce became legal late in some countries (Italy 1970, Spain 1981, Ireland 1996, Malta 2011), so their series start then. The rate depends on how many people are married, so it can fall when fewer people marry.
Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the EU countries are compared on one definition. 1 EU countries with data in other periods have no value for 2009 and are left out rather than filled from another source. Equal values share a rank.
