About this ranking

Known criminal offences per 1,000 residents. Known offences (hechos conocidos): criminal offences recorded by the Policía Nacional, the Guardia Civil, the regional police forces and the local police forces that report to the Sistema Estadístico de Criminalidad, whether reported by the public or found by the police.

Tourist areas and city centres show high rates because offences against visitors and commuters count where they happen, while the denominator counts only residents. Spain only: the country, its comunidades autónomas and its provinces from 2016, and municipalities over 20,000 residents from 2023. Calendar-year totals from the fourth-quarter Balance de Criminalidad of the Ministry of the Interior.

Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the regions are compared on one definition. Equal values share a rank.
