About this ranking

Number of offices (main offices and branches) of FDIC-insured commercial banks and savings institutions at year end, counted in the state where each office is located.

FDIC historical summary of insured institutions, year end, for the 50 states and DC; the national value covers the same area and excludes US territories. Each value adds commercial banks and savings institutions, which the FDIC reports separately; both figures are stored with it. Credit unions are not FDIC-insured and are not included. Offices are counted where they stand, whatever the state of the bank's headquarters. The series starts in 2019: before then the FDIC summary gives office counts for commercial banks only.

Every value in the ranking comes from the same publisher and the same period, so the states are compared on one definition. Equal values share a rank.
