Definition

The value of private residential construction put in place during the month, including new single-family construction, new multifamily construction, and residential improvements.

Monthly value of private construction put in place, in current U.S. dollars. Census publishes the seasonally adjusted series at an annual rate and in millions of dollars; the annual rate is not a forecast and the estimates are not adjusted for price changes. The measure is construction work installed or erected during the period, not home sales, permit values, or GDP. The current month is preliminary and may be revised as more data arrive. The residential total includes private residential improvements in addition to new single-family and new multifamily construction.
