Household spending in Australia on discretionary goods and services, monthly, seasonally adjusted, August 2026, AUD million. Western Australia is outlined. Same source and period for every area shown. Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics. Boundaries: Natural Earth (public domain).

Definition

Monthly household spending on discretionary goods and services, in millions of Australian dollars at current prices, seasonally adjusted, for Australia and the eight states and territories.

More on how it is measured
  • ABS Monthly Household Spending Indicator (dataflow HSI_M).
  • The ABS builds it mainly from de-identified bank transaction data, benchmarked to household final consumption expenditure in the national accounts, so it is not a sample survey.
  • Categories follow the national accounts purposes (COICOP based); discretionary and non-discretionary are ABS groupings of them.

Australian dollars at current prices, seasonally adjusted. Estimates up to December 2018 use a different method, which the ABS notes on every value of that period. Recent months are revised as more transaction data arrive. Not comparable with retail sales series, which cover sales by retailers rather than spending by households, or with other countries without a currency conversion.
