US national debt (total public debt outstanding)
Total public debt outstanding of the US federal government: Treasury securities held by the public plus intragovernmental holdings, in billions of US dollars. Monthly: amount on the last business day of the month (Debt to the Penny). Annual: amount at the end of the fiscal year (Historical Debt Outstanding).
Not the same as debt subject to the statutory limit, debt held by the public alone, or general government debt, and not a ratio to GDP (see federal_debt_gdp_ratio). The monthly series starts in April 1993 and shows a month once the Treasury has published a later day. Since 1977 fiscal years end on September 30; from 1921 to 1976 they ended on June 30, and Treasury dates the 1843 to 1920 amounts July 1, the day after the fiscal year closed. Amounts before 1843 refer to the start of a calendar year and are not included.
