Definition
Seasonally adjusted balance of US nonrevolving consumer credit outstanding at the end of each month, in USD million.
More on how it is measured
- This closed-end credit has a set repayment schedule and includes motor vehicle and education loans, as well as loans for mobile homes, boats, trailers, vacations and other purposes.
- Loans may be secured or unsecured, but loans secured by real estate are excluded (Federal Reserve G.19).
This is an outstanding balance, not new credit extended during the month, and does not measure all household debt. Published levels may contain breaks from source or method changes; the Federal Reserve adjusts its published flows and growth rates for those breaks. The latest preliminary release value is marked provisional. Revisions replace prior values while retaining their history.
