Definition

The value of private construction put in place for buildings that contain hardware used to store, process, and transmit digital information.

Monthly value of private data-center building construction put in place, in current U.S. dollars. Census classifies data centers within private office construction and defines them as buildings containing hardware for storing, processing, and transmitting digital information. The series is available separately from January 2014. The cost of data-center equipment such as racks and servers is excluded from construction spending. Values are seasonally adjusted annual rates in millions of dollars, not forecasts or inflation-adjusted amounts; the latest month is preliminary and may be revised.
