New home sales by conventional financing
Estimated number of new single-family houses sold in the quarter with conventional financing reported at the original sales agreement or deposit. Census defines conventional financing as a mortgage not guaranteed by a government agency such as FHA, VA, or RHS.
A sale is counted when a contract is signed or a deposit is accepted, even before construction starts; Census does not wait for closing. Financing is recorded at that first agreement or deposit, and later changes are not reflected. FHA and VA estimates may differ from agency loan totals. Census marks the newest quarterly release as preliminary and revises the prior quarter. Conventional financing is not guaranteed by a government agency. Census stopped collecting Rural Housing Service financing data, last published in 2007.
