Definition
Estimated number of new single-family houses sold in the quarter and classified as cash in the Census financing table. The classification is the type reported at the original sales agreement or deposit.
A sale is counted when a contract is signed or a deposit is accepted, even before construction starts; Census does not wait for closing. Financing is recorded at that first agreement or deposit, and later changes are not reflected. FHA and VA estimates may differ from agency loan totals. Census marks the newest quarterly release as preliminary and revises the prior quarter.
