New home sales, seasonally adjusted annual rate (US)

New privately owned single-family houses sold in the month, expressed as a seasonally adjusted annual rate: the number of sales the year would have if every month were like this one after removing the usual seasonal pattern. A sale is counted when a deposit is taken or a sales contract is signed, whether or not the house has been started. From the New Residential Sales release of the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. United States total.

Covers newly built single-family houses only; there is no official federal count of existing-home sales. An annual rate, not a monthly count: divide by 12 for a rough monthly figure. Published in thousands of houses; the latest four months are preliminary or revised and change in later releases. The 90 percent confidence interval of the monthly change is often wider than the change itself.
