Territorial greenhouse gas emissions, UK local authorities
All territorial greenhouse gas emissions of the local authority, in thousand tonnes of CO2 equivalent: industry, commercial, public sector, domestic, transport, agriculture, waste and the net balance of land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF), which can be negative.
More on how it is measured
- Territorial emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide estimated by DESNZ for each UK local authority from the national greenhouse gas inventory and weighted by their global warming potential.
- Emissions from energy are allocated to where the energy is used, so electricity counts where it is consumed, not at the power station; other emissions count where they occur, and waste emissions where the waste was produced.
- Fluorinated gases, about 2% of UK emissions, cannot be estimated by local authority and are not included.
Every edition recalculates the whole series back to 2005 with the latest inventory methods, so past values change between releases. Not comparable with ghg_emissions_total, which is a national inventory total without land use. Large industrial sites and motorways can dominate the figure of the authority where they sit.
