Definition

Deaths from [object Object] (ICD-10 F01 and F03) per 100,000 inhabitants, age-standardised to the revised European Standard Population of 2013. Both sexes, all ages, by place of residence (Eurostat causes of death statistics).

Alzheimer disease (G30) is not included; see standardised_death_rate_alzheimer. Countries differ widely in how often they record dementia as the underlying cause, which explains much of the gap between them. Age standardisation removes the effect of different age structures, so EU countries and regions can be compared with each other. US age-adjusted rates use the 2000 US standard population and are not comparable with these. Death certification and cause coding differ between countries, and Eurostat flags some values as following a different definition. Eurostat publishes these rates about two and a half years after the reference year.
