Crime severity index (Canada 2006 = 100)
Police-reported crime weighted by seriousness: each offence counts by the average sentence courts hand down for it, and the total is divided by the population and scaled so that Canada in 2006 equals 100. Statistics Canada Uniform Crime Reporting Survey, Table 35-10-0026-01, for Canada, the provinces and the territories.
Counts only crimes reported to and recorded by the police, which depends on reporting habits and police practice. A Canadian measure with no equivalent elsewhere, so it is not comparable with crime rates per 100,000 people in other countries.
