Average monthly private rent, pounds sterling
Average rent paid per calendar month for homes let by private landlords, in pounds sterling, from the Price Index of Private Rents (PIPR) of the Office for National Statistics. It covers new and existing tenancies, all property sizes and types, and is built from administrative rent data. Not seasonally adjusted. United Kingdom, its nations and English regions, and local authorities in England and Wales.
Rents actually paid, including long-standing tenancies, so it is below the asking rents of new listings on property portals. Rounded to the nearest pound. Scotland figures are mainly advertised new lets and Northern Ireland figures are newly advertised lets, so the ONS advises caution when comparing them with England and Wales. For US median gross rent see median_gross_rent.
