# Territorial greenhouse gas emissions per person, UK local authorities

All territorial greenhouse gas emissions of the local authority (local_ghg_emissions_total), in tonnes of CO2 equivalent, divided by its ONS mid-year population, as published by DESNZ. Territorial emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide estimated by DESNZ for each UK local authority from the national greenhouse gas inventory and weighted by their global warming potential. Emissions from energy are allocated to where the energy is used, so electricity counts where it is consumed, not at the power station; other emissions count where they occur, and waste emissions where the waste was produced. Fluorinated gases, about 2% of UK emissions, cannot be estimated by local authority and are not included.

## Key facts

- Published for 361 places, with figures from 2005 to 2024.
- Figures last updated on 2026-10-12.

- Indicator id: `local_ghg_emissions_per_capita`
- Unit: tonnes of CO2 equivalent per person
- Note: Most emissions are counted where they occur or where energy is used, so authorities with heavy industry or motorways and few residents show very high values. Every edition recalculates the whole series back to 2005 with the latest inventory methods, so past values change between releases. Not comparable with ghg_emissions_per_capita (national inventories without land use).
